Moving should be a happy, stress-free process but there is always so much to organise. One of the biggest issues people face is that they haven’t tackled all of the things they need to in time, creating last minute panic and doubt.
To help you keep on top of your move – starting at the point when there are 6 weeks left until the move and counting down to moving day – we’ve created a simple moving checklist for you to use. Keep this handy and work your way down the schedule for a smooth move.
6 weeks until the move
- Ensure you know the exact date of the move by this point
- Notify your landlord if leaving a rented property
- Organise cover for your new home, beginning the day of the move
- Source professional movers, check for insurance
- Arrange to use storage facilities where required
- Get final bills from utility companies and inform them of your move
- Sort your possessions into: keeping, selling, charity shop and binning
- Organise any new carpets or furniture to be delivered to your new home
4 weeks until moving day
- Change your address with all companies, especially for your banks
- Inform the council of your move so you stay up to date on electoral registration
- Sort out your mobile phone, registering it to your new address
- If you have kids, inform their school of the move, let any new schools know too
- Tell your doctor and dentist of your move, even if you’re still in the area
- Book your pets into kennels ahead of time if you think they’ll benefit
2 weeks until moving day
- Pack all your non-essentials, including clothes not needed immediately
- Arrange for the forwarding of your post with Royal Mail
- Inform any local services, such as milkmen and newspaper deliveries, of your move
- Give out address cards for family and friends with your new details
- Finalise and check over your arrangements with your removals company
- Check and arrange a time for the collection of the keys to your new property
1 week until the move
- Sort out moving your TV license, changing your address to avoid being fined
- Give electric and gas companies final notice, potentially transferring their service
- Return borrowed items, including library books, to avoid fees
- Tell your removals company about what furniture you need to move if you haven’t yet
3 days until the move
- Gather together a bag of things essential for the first day or so of your move, including clothes, toiletries and matches
- Have all your laundry done and dusted, saving you from doing mammoth washes
- Pick a spot to leave your old keys in and inform the new residents or estate agency
- Check parking restrictions at your new home and inform your removals company if there are any
2 days before the move
- Clear out your fridge and freezer, defrosting the latter so it’s ready to travel
- Empty the cupboards in the kitchen, donate any food you don’t want to take
- Collect together your documents, keep them all in a safe, dry place for transporting
1 day to moving day
- Finish all your packing unless your removals company has taken care of this
- Unplug all and disconnect all appliances and move them away from the walls
- Ensure you know the route to your new home well enough if doing the drive yourself
- Charge your phone – you don’t know at what point you’ll get a chance to on moving day
Moving day! Loading & Unloading
- Do a final check of the house to ensure everything has been loaded into the trucks
- Professional movers can do all the packing and heavy lifting if you’ve arranged this
- Say goodbye to your old house and hello to your new home
- Before unloading, inform your movers which room will be which to make it easier
- Ensure you’re not blocking traffic, direct moving trucks where needed
